Activity description
ELIX is a Greek NGO focused on non-formal education, inclusion and voluntary work. The organization is currently implementing a non-formal education project supporting migrant and refugee youth. As an ESC volunteer in the position of ‘lessons of solidarity’ you will have the opportunity to create your own learning space within the project by providing educational activities to refugee and migrant population located in the center of Athens, as well as the Greek population that want to join, since integration works both ways. This will help beneficiaries to gain necessary skills and knowledge, get in touch with people from different backgrounds and cultures facilitating the integration mentioned. Volunteers will deliver activities according to their own skills, needs or linguistic knowledge. Your tasks will include: a. Language courses and life-skills education for out-of-school children and young people: for those who are still on the move, and those who are not accessing formal education, b. Early childhood education, socioemotional development and school readiness., c. Promotion of adult/ parents’ integration: through sensitization, language course and social integration activities, d. Digital learning. As a clarification point a. and b. are carried out for the volunteers only is the support is needed, and point c. and d. are the main tasks that you will develop.
Volunteers will participate to an introduction training designed and carried out by the pedagogical team. The training will introduce to the group of volunteers the daily educational curriculum as well as the PSEA Policy (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) and ELIX CoC (Code of Conduct). During this training, participants will discuss about planned activities and modify educational curriculum according to their own competences, knowledge and desires. A team of experts including pedagogues, a social worker and a psychologist will provide day-to-day coverage and support of the educational needs, that will help participants achieve their full potentials.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers will be hosted in a rented apartment in Athens that will be shared among them, with chances of sharing room. The volunteer will receive a monthly food allowance (6 euros per day), and pocket money (6 euros per day). Travel costs to and from Athens are covered up to a certain amount, depending on your current location's distance to Greece. Greek language courses will be provided, if possible, by I Greek volunteer, however if it is not, it will be provided by the Online Linguistic Support, and insurance is covered by HENNER SAS. On-arrival training and mid-term evaluation will be provided and organised by the Greek National Agency.
Training during the activity
Volunteers will have the chance to develop their organizational skills by being involved in the preparation and implementation of different kinds of activities, improve their sense of responsibility and initiative towards the tasks undertaken, work in a team in a highly multicultural environment, meet different people and cultures. Besides that, they will have the opportunity to develop a social network and participate in seminars, trainings and other cultural actions of ELIX or partner organizations.
Participant profile
Available for 9 months. Volunteers should be ready and willing to work in the ELIX office together with other volunteers and staff of the organisation. Your application will be evaluated mainly on the following criteria: previous volunteering experience (preferably in workcamps) and/or international Youth Exchanges, good understanding of non-formal education and informal learning, support for sustainability, gender equality and social inclusion, good computer skills (Internet, Microsoft Office, Google Doc), good command of English. It is not requested to have studied a degree or course related to the educational or social work field, however willingness is a must. In general, we are searching for proactive people that are also willing to propose their own ideas to improve Elix departments.
Project Duration
It is important to mention that the duration of the project will be 252 days (which means 9 Months, including travel days).
