Projects name: ‘PRESS - Periphery and Rural areas: European Solidarity and Social Inclusion’
Projects dates: January – December 2020
PRESS aims to promote mobility and transnational volunteering as non-traditional form of emancipation and learning, aimed in particular at young people with fewer opportunities who will be directly or indirectly involved, in order to obtain a better knowledge of the active role that they can play in the communities of origin and in society in general, for a transition to adulthood and the responsibilities that this entails, in a harmonious and conscious way.
1st Project
The ESC project will take place across various locations, and specifically Santa Chiara House, the Social Centre Montanari, Budrio Municipality, Anzola Municipality, and La Strada association, that is, all organizations working in the area of Bologna.
Hosting organization: Santa Chiara House, Bologna
Theme(s): Disability, Special Needs, Outdoor Activities, Non-Discrimination
Number of volunteers: 4
Context: The Center for disabled people is located in Bologna, but it has many other locations out of Bologna where volunteers might be asked to carry on activities.
Volunteers will mostly be involved in socializing and integration activities for users, such as social-recreational activities of the centre and the participation in the initiatives promoted by the territory. Besides, they are expected to work side by side with staff members in daily common activities (workshops, physical activity, external activities and special events, excursions…)
Volunteers can live and work in a reasonably safe and protected environment. Both the Centre and the mini-apartments are safe places in compliance with latest safety standards.
Altogether, volunteers will develop some common projects (supported by the mentor), for example the VIDEO about the Project, radio interviews, public language tandems, public events…
All volunteers have the responsibility to contribute to the visibility of the project and of the European Solidarity Corps programme.
Accommodation: The volunteer will share the room with another volunteer (same sex) in a flat with all facilities, shared with other volunteers (local or international). The flat is composed by 2 double bedrooms, 1 toilet, a small kitchen and a dining room. There is wi-fi connection and washing machine. Bed linens and blankets are provided.
Food allowance: The volunteer will receive food money (120€). From Monday to Friday lunch will be provided by the center.
Local Transport: The volunteer will receive the annual urban bus ticket
Pocket money: 4€ per day
2nd Project
Hosting organization: Association ‘La Strada’
Theme(s): Creativity and Culture, Migrants, Youth with Fewer opportunities, Rural Development.
Number of volunteers: 2
Contest and environment
The not for profit Association "La Strada" has been working for fifteen years in the territory of the municipalities of Medicina and Castel Guelfo in the province of Bologna, in order to help children in conditions of social difficulties. Over the years, the work has expanded, involving young people and adults, especially immigrants. The activities of the association begin with daily work, each afternoon, with specific and personalized support open to boys and girls reported by the school and local social services. Afternoon activities include educational and entertainment moments with various themes that are being developed during the whole year.
The association is also helping children, young people, and adults with migrant background, recently arrived in Italy, to learn Italian, and we have created an information point about job research or other bureaucratic issues.
In addition, there are paths designed to help young people over 16 years of age who have abandoned school, to access work in a protected way.
The association carries out intercultural and peace education courses in schools, as well. In cooperation with local schools’ teachers, the Association has initiated educational projects for pupils from the local public high school and other schools in the area. The main topics discussed are: peace education through visits to Fossoli and Monte Sole, immigration and North-South relations of the world, foreign debt, equal and fair trade, Islam and Christianity in history and today.
The association organizes regular film screenings aimed at making children think about important current topics, such as bullying, racial hatred, gender difference, dialogue between generations, emotions for youth, love and friendship, sexuality, suffering, and death, through cinema.
The association also develops artistic workshops for young people: painting workshops (with different techniques) are currently underway, including those with one or more topics discussed together as a background, and a workshop for the joint construction of a video made by local young people.
Excursions and trips are also offered, especially during the summer, in order to know territory from the historical, cultural, geographical and artistic point of view.
At present, the youth followed by the association are in total 60 of which about 10 immigrants and 20 second-generation young people.
Given the diverse range of activities aimed at reducing social disadvantage and helping people at risk of social exclusion, the association actively cooperates with local institutions (City Council, social services, employment offices, schools ...) and with other associations present in the neighboring municipalities.
Volunteers should bring their laptop, if possible. Altogether, they will develop some common projects (supported by the mentor), for example the VIDEO about the project, radio interviews, public language tandems, public events…
All volunteers have the responsibility to contribute to the visibility of the project and of the European Solidarity Corps programme.
Accommodation: it will be in a shared flat for the 2 volunteers. Please consider that Medicina is a small village, we are looking for independent volunteers willing to live in a rural area.
Food allowance: the volunteer will receive food allowance (150 euro)
Local transport: the volunteer will receive bus tickets for activities, if needed.
Pocket money: 5 euro per day
Practical information for both projects
Language training: Volunteers are really welcome to learn Italian before and during their service.
Before coming to Italy, volunteers can already practice by using several on line tools which we will suggest, but also by watching movies, listening to some Italian songs...the web is full of interesting resources!
Before coming each volunteer will receive an email by OLS (Online Linguistic Support) with the link for the ‘Assessment test’. After filling it, each volunteer will receive another email to start the on line course provided by the Erasmus+ program (http://erasmusplusols.eu/ ).
OLS will be the official tool to use to learn Italian during the ESC project. YouNet will provide additional language training with an Italian teacher for six months.
Closest airport/travel direction Bologna is the closest airport. Volunteer can also land at the airport of Milan, Venice, Rome and then take a train to Bologna.
