Αναλυτικότερα
The center for asylum seekers ‘St. Elisabeth-Haus’ (Belgian Red Cross) located in Manderfeld in the German speaking community of Belgium, hosts up to 216 residents (families, minors, women and men) from different cultures, nationalities and religions. The mission of the Red Cross is the administration of the center, as well as the reception and support of asylum seekers in their difficult situation. The aim is to provide a safe home for residents during their asylum procedure. More than 25 staff members perform several duties to provide support for residents; that is to say, social and medical support, as well as entertainment in addition to answering day to day queries.
Our main objective by hosting an EVS project is primordially to increase the individual learning performance of the volunteer (knowledge, life experience, and attitude) employability, sense of initiative and entrepreneurship (implementation of personal projects), self-empowerment and self-esteem, foreign language competences (German and French), intercultural awareness, and active participation in society (a lot of networking) as well as giving an insight loo into the way Red Cross handles situations of emergency. Furthermore, we would like to mention that the volunteer gets a lot of space for her/his own projects. The volunteer will get in contact with principles and methodologies of acceptance, empathy, openness, etc. up to intercultural sensitiveness and communication, conflict and emotional management, and professional distance. We strongly believe that this experience will build up the volunteer’s professional approach to handle situations of emergency, as well as it will prepare him/her for him/her future working career.
Since the main objective of the center is the support of asylum seekers, this is going to be the main task of the volunteer, i.e. she/he will perform determined duties in the basic daily work (provision of meals, distribution of bed linen and hygiene articles, reception service, etc.).
Furthermore, animations take place in and out of the center where they may vary from activities involving sports, culture, language lessons, computer lessons, manufacturing or even long-term projects in which asylum seekers strengthen their personal skills as well as their independence and autonomy.
Volunteer’s Profile:
A basic knowledge of one of the two languages of the project (French or German) is mandatory. One criterion is especially important: The volunteer has to be open-minded regarding other people and foreign cultures. In addition, she/he should have a particular interest in the topics of refugees, asylum, migration, conflict, education and/or pedagogy. Since the experience will take place in a rural area, it is very important that the volunteer is in possession of a driver’s license and can drive.
Volunteer’s Rights:
Sending organizations and the management of the center will take care of all administrative and logistic steps in mutual agreement for the volunteer’s placement, and will make sure to arrange trainings: pre-departure training, on-arrival training and mid-term training.
In addition, the volunteer will have a Mentor who will work as help to tackle any issues present during the period of her/his placement.
Food: The volunteer will receive food allowance on a monthly basis. Furthermore, there is a kitchenette in the volunteer’s house where she/he can prepare food. The volunteer is also allowed to eat at the Center's canteen during the working period.
Accommodation: An apartment is rented by the hosting organization as to meet the volunteers’ requirements during their period at the project.
Transport arrangements: The volunteer will receive train and bus tickets valid for travelling across all Belgium.
Volunteers can take part in several activities regarding Red Cross trainings, and will have the possibility to become more active and implement their own projects and ideas.
The main goal of this project is to encourage our volunteers to show humanity, empathy and a true will to carry and help others, while improving and expanding the skills they have and are to obtain during their placement.
