WHO IS CONCORDIA?

CONCORDIA is a non profit making association born in 1950.

CONCORDIA seeks to contribute to the social life of communities through the bringing together of volunteers from different countries/regions and walks of life. These volunteers carry out tasks which are useful to the community as a whole. The association seeks to facilitate European and international mobility and the exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and peace. There is a strong emphasis on active citizenship, participation and solidarity, that this be in a small group, locally, or at a larger level (nationally, Europe or internationally)

CONCORDIA is a national organisation with its headquarters in Paris and seven regional delegations with their own specificities. It employs 25 permanents. Our main activities are the short term and long term volunteerings in international project, as the work-camps ( our main activity), the EVS, the training (intercultural or technical to animate work-camps t) and the local activities of the association life.

The association counts 200 active members involved in the non-formal education project of the association. The members take part all year long to actions such as trainings, short work camps, meetings, …

EVS

We are sending, hosting and coordinating EVS organisation here in Aquitaine. We coordinate one EVS program in partnership with the district of Bordeaux. We host six EVS volunteer. We send around 15 volunteers each year.

The volunteers hosted by Concordia can exchange about their experiences with people who would like to go as an EVS and former french EVS volunteer.

The volunteer will take part to the important moments of the associative life of CONCORDIA such as the general assembly in November or the meeting to conclude the international work camps period in October. Indeed, the volunteers will have the opportunity to share and live an associative project of Concordia.

General Conditions

Accommodations
The volunteers will be staying in the Concordia Aquitaine’s house. The house is shared between the office and the SVE house. The volunteers are totally independent. The flat is furnished. Each volunteer shares a room.
The accommodation is situated near the town center of St Caprais de Bordeaux. A food shop is also close by.

Money:
Each volunteer will receive 7€ per day for food ( around 230 € per month) and the indemnities are 115€ per month in France now). The volunteer will have the possibility to share purchases with others EVS volunteers.

The volunteers can share a car given by Concordia. But this car is mostly used for the projects in different districts.

French lessons:
French lessons are possible for foreigners with the other volunteers. The main course objective is to facilitate the life of the volunteer in France. It is not an intensive course to become fluent as soon as possible but simply a help.

PROJECTS IN AQUITAINE

Our proposed hosting placements are all situated in the Aquitaine region in south-west France. This region extends north-south from 50km north of Bordeaux down to the Pyrenees’ and west-east from the coast 300km inland. Five "departments" (districts) are represented: Gironde, Dordogne, Landes, Lot et Garonne et Pyrenees’ Atlantiques.

Some of our hosting placements are situated in St Caprais de Bordeaux ,the same village as our association's offices and volunteers' house. Saint Caprais de Bordeaux is a small commuter village 20 km from Bordeaux, in the Entre-deux-Mers area, surrounded by vineyards.

The long-term host placements in St Caprais are not in a live-in community but the volunteers do live together in a house which is also used by the association. This entails certain expectations on our part concerning the volunteers : that the house be kept clean and tidy and that each person contributes to the cooking and cleaning equally : that the volunteers behave courteously to each other, show respect for each other, for the house and its furnishings and for CONCORDIA and the local population. Volunteers may have to share a bedroom (with someone of the same sex) for all or part of their stay. Visitors to the association are accommodated in the house from time to time, and must be welcomed by the volunteers.

Our projects offer the possibility for volunteers to express their sense of solidarity for others through concrete actions which are visible to the local community.

Tools for Life (“Les outils pour la vie”)

This project was created in 2003, with the goal of recuperating, renovating and sending manual tools to the partners identified in the south countries. This activity was created by a former EVS volunteer that did his EVS in a similar project in Great-Britain (tools for solidarity in Belfast).

We wish to have 2 volunteers for 9 – 12 months. The volunteer works a lot with local french volunteers. One employee of Concordia supports him from the start and progressively (it depends of his competences) leaves him/her the opportunity to manage alone the activities related to his/her project. The workplace is in the garage in the garden of Concordia near the office and of the EVS house. Since the first EVS hosting on this project, the project has greatly developed. It has an incredible impact in the local population, intergenerational and, since the hosting of EVS, intercultural also.

This project enables us to host volunteers off season to sensitize them to a manual and volunteer activity. They can also acknowledge and get acquainted with the themes as international solidarity. There is also the occasion of being sensitized to a consumption lifestyle more reasonable and recycling of materials. This project was so successful that we decided this year to realise a youth exchange about responsible consumption, theme chosen by the youth.

During the days we work with fewer opportunities volunteers, we try to reflect and evaluate with the EVS about what he learnt and developed (competences).

The EVS is first of all proud and happy of supporting the people in the developing countries but as the time goes by, he/she discover they have competences as patience, the importance of helping each other, manual work and they understand the importance of volunteering.

Meeting EVS gives this public the opportunity to open their horizons, to have new perspectives as they don’t have the chance to leave the territory often. This work with the social-educational structures, prevention clubs, social cultural activities centres has different ways of implementation within the public they work with.

Youth from the CDC come also during some Wednesday afternoon to restore tools with the volunteers. They organise sometimes, with the animators of the youth centre, session of sensitization the public to the project and to collect old tools. Apart from this aspect our partnerships with the CDC allow us to propose different activities to the youth (this year we realised manual car with the tools that they restore). The partnership is so efficient that last year we organise a mini workcamp with the youth from the CDC and the volunteers from our international workcamp.

We suggest that the volunteer may also like to participate in general tasks around the volunteers' house… a vegetable garden, general gardening to make the place prettier, maintenance and decoration. We also have the idea that the volunteer could organise mini-training sessions for the local population. A sort of "skills exchange". But this will depend upon his/her wishes and capacities. The volunteer will through this project come into contact with every generation of the local population and we would like him/her to bring a European dimension to the project which concerns international solidarity.

This year, we would like to keep developing the project of community garden. The EVS will also be in charge of this project and help the French volunteer with that.
