1. IBG 02, OPEN-AIR THEATRE HEIDENHEIM, MANU CULT, 13/04/19 - 27/04/19, 18-99.
This amazing cultural project is perfect for anyone who is interested in theatres and wants to have a look behind the scenes! Your host will be the Open-Air Theatre Heidenheim, the 2nd largest one of its kind in Southern Germany. Situated on the “castle hill” of the town, surrounded by forests, it can accommodate 1100 spectators. The Open-Air Theatre is run by a non-profit association and they are excited to meet international volunteers! If you take part in the project, you will help with the set construction! In 2019, two plays will be performed (“West Side Story” and “The Thief Lord”) and the stage needs to be renewed accordingly: in the end, the scenery is supposed to look like Manhattan in the fifties and Venice at the same time – a very interesting and challenging task! Therefore, you will create house fronts, floors, stairs, even a building and a Venetian gondola! You will screw, nail, and paint. Smaller requisite needs to be manufactured, too. There will be a work instructor who will help you with all tasks. For sure it will be helpful though, if you have a bit of experience in manual/constructional work and used tools like cordless or screwdrivers before.
2. IBG 01, COMMUNITY WORK AACH, RENO MANU, 16/03/19 - 30/03/19, 18-99.
If you look for a project which answers a local need and, at the same time, will provide you with an intense exchange experience with locals, Aach, a small village not far from Trier, is the right place for you to be. In the centre of the village of Aach there has been an area with several small ponds. The ponds were filled and now the place should become a green area for everybody to meet and enjoy life outdoors. This workcamp will mark the first step in this transformation process, by creating paths, some wooden benches and a first element to attract people. The village is situated in a deep valley, the different houses climb up the steep hills. You can go hiking, make barbecues, discover nature, and have different activities together with locals (e.g. an international cooking event or a training session together with the local voluntary fire-brigade.) The number of excursions will be limited, due to poor local transport, but for sure you will visit Trier, the oldest German city with many Roman sights (as Porta Nigra), a famous cathedral, many clubs and events.
3. IBG 03, ADVENTURE LAND LAUCHRINGEN, CONS, 04/05/19 - 18/05/19, 18-99.
This project will take place in cooperation with the “Familienzentrum” (family centre), an organization that offers various programs to people of all ages who, hence, have a lovely environment to meet, exchange and educate themselves. In 2018, they built an “Adventure Land”, that is, a big house with sleeping and sanitary facilities, kitchen, a workshop space and a big common room. This place is going to host groups during school holidays and to offer an afternoon program to children and young people.
Although the building itself has already been finished, there is still work to do in the surrounding garden area. Your main task will be the renovation of an old construction trailer: on the external part, you will add timber cladding and set up a terrace. Inside, a new floor is needed and walls need to be covered. Also, you will set up a ramp that allows people in wheelchair to access the construction trailer. Once it is finished, it will be used by children to play, and occasionally as a small “backstage area” for bands that perform in the “Adventure Land”.
The workcamp is located in the small and pretty town Lauchringen, in the very South of the Black Forest. It is just a stone’s throw away from the Swiss border and not far from places like Lake Constance and the university town of Freiburg. Lauchringen itself offers everything you need: shopping facilities, cafés, bars and much more!
4. IBG 04, GRIMBURG CASTLE, RENO FEST, 27/05/19 - 06/06/19, 18-30.
Enjoy living in the Grimburg Castle, support the maintenance of its grounds, and help to organize a small festival! In this project there will be indeed two parts of work. The first one will be the maintenance of the castle’s grounds, by doing various works, such as cutting bushes and grass, protecting the masonry, maintaining the historic mediaeval herb garden, and do some cleaning work in the castle’s and witches museum. Work will depend on weather conditions. The second group of activities in which you will take part regards the support for the castle’s festival which will take place on May 30th: you will be involved in the local team of volunteers; support in the preparation and organization of the castle’s festival; help to set up the festival; and sell food and drinks, among other activities. You will become part of the local festival team and of course celebrate with them! Although the castle is immersed in nature and is isolated, you will also meet local people and share time with them or make an excursion to Trier, the oldest German city with 100,000 inhabitants. There you will find many historical sites from the Roman period, many clubs and events.
